Montalto Ligure, situated in the Argentina Valley, is a high medieval town, born before year one thousand xxxx with small gruops of inhabitants of the coast in search of a shelter from Lombard and saracens invasions. The legend narrates that it was the shelter of two young newlywed, excaping from the law of ” jus primae noctis ” which the Count Oberto of Ventimiglia claimed to excercise in the area. Joined by many friends, they formed the first resdiential complex of Montalto (from latin “mons Auts”) that ended up under the dominion of the counts of Ventimiglia until mid-1200 when it became territory of the Republic of Genova, becoming part of the Podestrey of Triora.
The Lodge of the spouses is an ancient building, recently renovated, situated in the characteristic old town. You can appreciate here the inside stone walls, arches, flooring made by ancient ardesia slates called “ciappe” and in the center, the coat of arms of the town also in ardesia made by a local artist. Montalto is a romantic destination and lovers of all ages that visit the town, are fascinated.
